To drain a water heater, follow these steps:
1. Turn off the power or gas supply to the water heater.
2. Allow the water in the tank to cool down before draining.
3. Locate the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater.
4. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve and place the other end in a suitable drainage area.
5. Open the pressure relief valve on the water heater to allow air into the tank and help with draining.
6. Open the drain valve and let the water flow out completely.
7. Close the drain valve once all the water has been drained.
8. Remove the garden hose and close the pressure relief valve.
9. Refill the water heater with fresh water before turning the power or gas supply back on.
Remember to exercise caution when draining a water heater, as the water may be hot and could cause burns.
